Paro Tsechu- 5 Days

In Bhutan, festivals known as Tsechus are celebrated once a year in each of the 20 districts. Tsechus typically occur on the 10th day of a month in the Bhutanese lunar calendar, which is why they are called “Tsechu,” meaning “10th day.” During these festivals, locals from various parts of the district come together to celebrate.

At this time of year, people of all ages dress in beautiful Bhutanese attire and jewelry, proudly displaying them in the crowds. It’s the best time to experience Bhutanese culture, traditional dress, and the vibrant community spirit.

Day 1.

Arrival of guest and transferring to hotel in Thimphu. The first day is usually reserved for our guest to take rest before starting the trip.  We do arrange brief city walk meeting locals, visiting restaurants and some handicraft shops.

Day 2

We will start the trip by visiting Kuensel Phodrang, popularly known as Buddha Point, to see the largest Buddha statue. Buddha Point is renowned for its panoramic views of Thimphu, offering a sight of the entire city from Babesa to Kabesa in the north.

Next, we will drive down to the Thimphu Memorial Chorten, built in memory of our beloved late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuck. Following that, we’ll visit Changangkha Lhakhang, and then proceed to Motithang Zoo. The zoo is famous for housing the Takin, Bhutan’s rare national animal, believed to have been created by the Tibetan saint Lam Drukpa Kuenley. The zoo also features other wildlife such as deer and sambar deer.

Afterward, we will travel to Tango Monastery. Originally built by Lam Phajo Drukgom Zhipo in the 12th century, the current structure was constructed in the 18th century by Bhutan’s eighth secular ruler, Desi Tenzin Rabgye. Today, Tango Monastery serves as a school for the Drukpa Kagyu tradition of Tibetan Buddhism and as a retreat center.

Day 3.

On the third day, we will go for the first day of the Tsechu. On the day you’ll find the atmosphere buzzing with excitement. Men, women, and children dressed in their finest traditional attire fill the area, creating a colorful and festive scene. The highlight of the festival is the series of mask dances, or “cham,” performed by monks in elaborate costumes. These dances, which depict stories of Bhutanese history and mythology, are not only mesmerizing to watch but also believed to bring blessings and protection from evil spirits.

As you watch the performances, you’ll notice the intricate details of the masks and costumes, each with its own symbolic meaning. The rhythmic movements and haunting music of the dances create an enchanting experience that immerses you in the spiritual essence of Bhutanese culture.

Apart from the mask dances, you can also enjoy traditional Bhutanese folk dances and music. The energy and joy of the performers are contagious, and you’ll find yourself captivated by the unique blend of sounds and sights.

After enjoying the festival, we will go to explore Paro town. The streets are lined with charming shops where you can find handcrafted souvenirs, textiles, and local art. Meeting and chatting with the friendly locals adds another layer of enjoyment to your day.

Paro Tsechu is more than just a festival; it’s a celebration of Bhutanese culture, spirituality, and community. The sights, sounds, and experiences of the day will leave you with unforgettable memories and a deeper appreciation for the rich traditions of Bhutan.

Day 4.

Trek to Paro Taktshang

Paro Taktsang, popularly known as the Tiger’s Nest Monastery, is one of the iconic and sacred sites built in 17th century on the edge of a cliff in the upper Paro valley. It is also one of the most visited place and religion icon in Bhutan. The monastery is about 3120 meters above sea level which takes up to 4-5 hours to hike up and 1.5 hours to descend. Hiking up to Taktsang can be challenging yet, its rewarding with unforgettable experience due to its location and breathtaking views.

After traveling for days and hiking in the mountainous path, to help ease tired body we will go for a traditional Bhutanese hot stone bath. This traditional bath involves soaking in a wooden tub filled with water heated by hot stones infused with local herbs, believed to have healing properties, providing a perfect remedy for our aching bodies and a relaxing end to a memorable day.
