Paro Festival
The Paro Tshechu Festival is one of Bhutan’s most vibrant and spiritually significant events, held annually in the picturesque Paro Valley. Celebrated over five days in March or April, the festival honors Guru Rinpoche, the saint who introduced Buddhism to Bhutan. The highlight of the festival is the mesmerizing mask dances (Cham dances), performed by monks and laymen in colorful costumes, depicting stories of Bhutanese history, mythology, and spiritual teachings. Locals and visitors gather at Paro Dzong, dressed in their finest traditional attire, to witness the dances, receive blessings, and celebrate Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage. The festival culminates with the unveiling of a giant religious thangka, believed to bring blessings and cleanse sins. Tour Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Paro – Welcome to Bhutan
Kuzuzangpo! Welcome to Bhutan, the Land of Happiness. As you step into Paro International Airport, your guide and driver will warmly greet you. Paro, nestled in a lush valley surrounded by forests, is your gateway to this magical kingdom. If you’re visiting in March, you might catch the vibrant Paro Tshechu Festival, a five-day celebration of Bhutanese culture and spirituality.
Your first stop is the Bhutan National Museum, housed in a historic watchtower. Here, you’ll explore ancient artifacts, religious paintings, and traditional costumes that tell the story of Bhutan’s rich heritage. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Bhutanese dinner, optionally accompanied by a cultural dance show. Rest well at your hotel in Paro, ready for the adventures ahead.
Day 2: Paro Tshechu Festival & Journey to Thimphu
Start your day at the Paro Tshechu Festival, held at the majestic Paro Dzong. Witness the colorful mask dances, traditional music, and vibrant costumes as locals celebrate Guru Rinpoche, the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. The festival is a spiritual and social highlight, offering a deep connection to Bhutanese culture.
After the festivities, drive to Thimphu, Bhutan’s capital. Along the way, stop at Tamchhog Lhakhang, a temple connected by a unique iron chain bridge. In Thimphu, visit the towering Buddha Dordenma Statue, a symbol of peace, and the National Memorial Chorten, a serene stupa dedicated to Bhutan’s Third King. Day 3: Exploring Thimphu’s Culture
Begin your day at the Bhutan Post Office, where you can create personalized stamps with your photo. Next, visit the School of Arts and Crafts to see students mastering Bhutan’s 13 traditional arts, from painting to weaving. At the Simply Bhutan Museum, experience interactive exhibits showcasing Bhutanese life, including traditional dances and archery.
End your day at Tashichho Dzong, the seat of Bhutan’s government and a stunning example of Bhutanese architecture. Stroll through its courtyards and gardens, learning about its historical and spiritual significance. Overnight in Thimphu.
Day 4: Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass
Today, drive to Punakha via the breathtaking Dochula Pass. At 3,120 meters, the pass offers panoramic views of the Himalayas and 108 chortens honoring Bhutanese soldiers. Descend into the warm Punakha Valley and visit Chimi Lhakhang, the Fertility Temple, known for its unique phallus symbols and blessings.
In Punakha, explore the stunning Punakha Dzong, a fortress at the confluence of two rivers. Admire its intricate architecture and learn about its role in Bhutan’s history. Overnight in Punakha, surrounded by serene landscapes.
Day 5: Punakha to Paro – Scenic Return
Cross the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan’s longest, for stunning views of the valley. Then, hike to Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a hilltop stupa offering breathtaking views of Punakha. Afterward, drive back to Paro via Dochula Pass, enjoying the scenic journey.

Day 6: Tiger’s Nest Monastery Hike
Today, embark on the highlight of your trip – the hike to Tiger’s Nest Monastery. Perched on a cliff 900 meters above the valley, this iconic site is Bhutan’s most sacred pilgrimage destination. The hike takes about 5-6 hours round trip, with stunning views of the Paro Valley.
After the hike, visit Drukgyel Dzong, a historic fortress with views of Mount Jomolhari, and Kyichu Lhakhang, one of Bhutan’s oldest temples. Optionally, enjoy a traditional hot stone bath or light butter lamps for blessings. Overnight in Paro.
Day 7: Departure from Paro
It’s time to say goodbye to Bhutan. Your guide will escort you to Paro International Airport for your onward journey. Carry with you the memories of Bhutan’s stunning landscapes, rich culture, and warm hospitality. Safe travels!
